THE PROJECT

LYQD set out to make the Irish whiskey cask market easier to access, understand and navigate.

Buying or selling a whiskey cask involves considerably more than a conventional online purchase. Each cask is a distinct asset with its own provenance, spirit type, distillery, filling date, capacity, storage location and ownership record.

LYQD partnered with JamJo to translate these complex industry processes into a secure and accessible digital platform. The result is Ireland’s first digital exchange dedicated to buying, selling and managing whiskey casks.

THE CHALLENGE

The whiskey cask market has traditionally been relationship-driven, with transactions involving distilleries, cask owners, buyers, bonded warehouses and other specialist parties.

LYQD needed a platform that could bring these participants and processes together while creating greater clarity around what was being offered and how ownership was recorded.

Unlike a standard eCommerce product, every cask has a unique history and set of characteristics. The platform needed to accommodate information including:

  • Distillery and spirit type
  • Cask number and filling date
  • Cask age and maturation
  • Wood and previous fill
  • Capacity and alcohol strength
  • Ownership and provenance
  • Bonded storage arrangements
  • Asking price and offer status

The platform also needed to support different types of participants. Someone purchasing an individual cask has different requirements from a trade buyer sourcing bulk inventory or a private client assembling a larger portfolio.

Trust, traceability and security therefore had to be incorporated throughout the user experience.

JAMJO’S APPROACH

JamJo worked closely with LYQD to design and develop a custom marketplace around the real-world lifecycle of a whiskey cask.

The platform provides separate pathways for individual cask ownership, bulk sourcing and private clients. This allows each audience to access the information and services most relevant to them without making the wider platform difficult to navigate.

JamJo’s work included:

  • Platform planning and information architecture
  • User experience and responsive interface design
  • Development of individual cask and collection listings
  • Distillery profiles and structured cask information
  • Buyer, seller and private-client journeys
  • User registration and account functionality
  • KYC and KYB verification integration
  • Stripe payment and Strong Customer Authentication integration
  • Offer management and transaction workflows
  • Ownership and settlement records
  • Bonded-warehouse and dual-ledger processes
  • Custom hosting, security and ongoing technical support

Cask listings present complex information in a consistent, comparable format. Buyers can examine details such as age, capacity, fill type, cask type and distillery before deciding whether to proceed.

The platform also supports multi-cask collections, private-access opportunities and bulk sourcing for trade buyers and bottlers.

When an offer is submitted, the system manages its status through the review and transaction process. Accepted casks can be temporarily locked against competing offers while settlement is completed, helping translate an offline trading process into a controlled digital workflow.

AI Cask Intelligence

JamJo developed and integrated AI Cask Intelligence, an active feature designed to help LYQD users understand complex whiskey-cask information more easily.

The feature turns detailed data, including distillery, age, fill type, wood, capacity, alcohol strength, provenance and storage information, into clearer, accessible guidance. Users can ask questions about individual casks, explore their characteristics and better understand the factors relevant to their requirements.

Rather than adding a generic chatbot to the platform, JamJo embedded AI within the cask-discovery journey. AI Cask Intelligence works alongside LYQD’s structured data, verified records and specialist support, demonstrating how purpose-built AI can improve a complex commercial workflow while keeping the user in control.

AI Cask Intelligence is intended to support research and understanding. It does not provide financial, legal or investment advice.

Building Trust Into the Platform

Trust is central to the LYQD experience.

Casks are reviewed for traceable provenance before being made available through the exchange. Users complete appropriate identity or business verification, while inventory is connected to licensed bonded storage and documented ownership records.

Peer-to-peer payments are processed through Stripe, with EU Strong Customer Authentication and established payment-security measures incorporated into the transaction process.

Ownership information is maintained through LYQD’s dual-ledger approach, connecting the platform’s digital records with the relevant warehouse records to provide greater clarity for owners and buyers.

THE RESULTS

LYQD has created a dedicated digital marketplace through which users can explore, buy, sell and manage Irish whiskey casks.

The live exchange brings together verified cask listings from established Irish producers, including Great Northern Distillery, West Cork Distillers and Ahascragh Distillery. It accommodates individual casks, multi-cask collections, private-access opportunities and specialist bulk-sourcing requirements.

The active AI Cask Intelligence feature gives LYQD a differentiated foundation for helping users understand complex cask information within the exchange.

For LYQD, the platform provides a scalable digital foundation for serving private cask owners, trade buyers, bottlers, distilleries and other industry participants.

For JamJo, the project demonstrates our ability to combine marketplace development, complex data, payment infrastructure, identity verification, ownership processes and user-centred design within a specialist and highly regulated commercial environment.

LYQD is also an Enterprise Ireland-supported client company through the agency’s work with Irish High Potential Start-Ups.
